Universal Music Group has filed a lawsuit against music distribution platform DistroKid, alleging unlawful practices that include the distribution of AI-generated music at scale. UMG's suit specifically targets DistroKid's alleged role in enabling what the label group describes as "flooding platforms with AI-generated slop."

The case marks a significant escalation in the music industry's legal reckoning with AI-generated content and its distribution infrastructure. By targeting a distributor rather than a generative AI developer directly, UMG is signaling that liability may extend to the platforms that facilitate the mass upload and monetization of synthetic music.
