Analysis by data journalist Joseph Politano, drawing on US Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, finds that American creative industries have shed more than 200,000 jobs over the past four years — the period coinciding with the public availability of generative AI tools — with nearly 50,000 of those losses occurring in the past year alone. Politano describes it as "one of the worst stretches for media employment in modern US history," comparable in intensity and duration only to the recessions of 2001 and 2008.

The steepest declines are concentrated in digital creative work: graphic design, broadcasting, publishing, film, and sound recording. While some live-arts sectors such as museums and performing arts have seen growth, employment for independent artists has fallen sharply. Job growth across media and creative industries as a whole has remained negative since 2023, as generative AI tools offer accessible, low-cost alternatives to human design, video, literary, and audio production work.
