Topaz Labs has retired its long-running "Topaz Video AI" product, capping it at v7.1.5 with no further model updates. Its replacement, rebranded as "Topaz Video," launched effectively as v8 but reset version numbering to v1 and shifted to a subscription-only model — a move that drew significant backlash from an existing user base accustomed to perpetual licenses. Additional friction came from confining local rendering of newer Starlight models to a higher-priced Pro tier, which frustrated individual freelancers.

The bigger news overshadowing the pricing upheaval is Adobe's announced acquisition of Topaz Labs. Adobe Premiere has long lacked competitive AI upscaling and denoising, and the deal is widely seen as a logical fix. Open questions remain around how and when Topaz technology will be integrated into Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, and what the acquisition means for standalone pricing and existing subscribers.
