NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) has expanded its NewNarratives grant initiative to $35,000 in total funding, distributed across six grants in three categories. The expansion includes four unrestricted $5,000 grants supported by the Rhulen Family Foundation, a returning $5,000 environmental storytelling grant backed by Athens Services, and a newly introduced $10,000 AI storytelling grant powered by generative filmmaking startup Absurd.
The Absurd grant comes with a three-month fellowship giving the recipient access to Absurd's AI storytelling tools, with the company set to onboard beta users on August 3rd. Since its 2021 launch in partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery, NewNarratives has received more than 1,175 applications from over 89 countries and distributed nearly $300,000 to emerging filmmakers. Applications are now open to NFMLA members.
