Judge Clears UMG and Sony to Pursue Stream-Ripping Claims Against Suno AI

A federal judge has allowed Universal Music Group and Sony Music to proceed with allegations that Suno trained its AI music generator by stream-ripping copyrighted songs from YouTube. The ruling marks a significant step forward in one of the music industry's most closely watched AI copyright cases.

However, the judge drew a line on scope, denying the labels' bid to expand the lawsuit to cover more than 61,000 additional recordings beyond the 560 already named in the suit. The decision keeps the core stream-ripping claims alive while limiting how broadly the case can sweep at this stage.
