Harry Potter Producer David Barron Backs AI-Driven Adaptation of The Call of the Wild

Veteran British producer David Barron, known for producing six Harry Potter films, has signed on to produce a generative AI-driven feature adaptation of Jack London's 1903 novel The Call of the Wild. The production will be led by screenwriter-director Simon Rumley and produced alongside Mark Sandell and Nick Price, with work taking place at AI studio nmatic. The team plans to combine generative AI with traditional CGI and VFX, using nmatic's cloud-based tools to give artists control over the visual output without relying on conventional studio pipelines.

The filmmakers argue the approach makes this the first truly faithful adaptation of London's novel—one told entirely from the perspective of the canine protagonist Buck. Previous adaptations, including the 2020 Harrison Ford version, shifted the narrative focus. Barron cited the epic Alaskan geography, visceral animal conflicts, and sheer logistical scale as reasons prior attempts fell short, and believes generative technology has finally closed that gap. The production is currently developing the visual style for the film's icy landscapes and animal characters.
