FoxNXT Head Says AI Is Already Changing How Filmmakers Pitch Movies

Jon Flynn, EVP and head of FoxNXT — Fox Entertainment's internal AI and next-gen technology studio — revealed at TheWrap and What's Trending's AI Creator Day that filmmakers are arriving at pitch meetings with AI-informed budgets. In one notable example, a creative proposed using AI tools to cut roughly 15% of a feature's typical budget, then reinvesting those savings into practical production elements like location shoots — effectively keeping the total ask flat while raising ambition. Flynn said the approach was not a one-off, pointing to other uses such as adding VFX explosions affordably or reconstructing speculative camera angles for documentary content.
Flynn framed AI's core value as time savings rather than straight cost reduction: a 20% efficiency gain across a six-episode series could yield a seventh episode rather than a smaller budget. He stressed, however, that realizing that potential requires industry-wide training, arguing that studios can teach tools but cannot replicate the years of craft and storytelling experience that creative professionals bring. Flynn stopped short of dismissing displacement concerns outright, but consistently positioned AI as a means to make more content and raise on-screen quality within fixed budgets.
