In a New York Times interview, rap producer Dr. Dre and Interscope Records co-founder Jimmy Iovine came out firmly in favor of AI music production tools, comparing current skepticism to historical resistance to the drum machine and synthesizer. Dre said he uses AI in his production process "as a tool to see what it would do with what I just did," and suggested that creators who view it as a threat struggle with creativity. Iovine went further, saying he sees "no downside at all," and coined the term "closet AI producers" to describe peers — including Timbaland — who use AI but won't say so publicly.

The interview arrives as Spotify and Apple Music prepare to label AI-generated artists on their platforms, and as Spotify partners with Universal Music Group on an AI cover-song feature. The broader debate over AI in music mirrors tensions across film and television, with some high-profile directors and actors welcoming the technology while others — including Guillermo del Toro and Seth Rogen — have rejected it outright. Industry-wide concerns remain around job automation and the use of copyrighted material in AI training.
