Autodesk has announced 3D Editor + Canvas, a major expansion of its Flow Studio platform that lets filmmakers block and direct scenes in 3D space before handing off final rendering to AI-powered 2D video models. The tool addresses a longstanding limitation of generative AI video: the lack of precise creative control over camera movement, character performance, composition, and timing when working solely through prompts or 2D interfaces.

The new workflow allows creators to combine characters and assets built in Flow Studio with AI-generated environments from tools such as World Labs Marble, assembling fully realized cinematic scenes in minutes. Autodesk frames 3D Editor + Canvas as a natural extension of its decades-long presence in production pipelines via Maya, 3ds Max, and Arnold — now brought forward into an AI-native creative platform.
