As GEMA Awaits Its Suno Copyright Verdict, the German Collecting Society Launches 'PLAI' — a Fully Licensed Dataset for Training AI Music Tools

German music collecting society GEMA has launched PLAI, a fully licensed dataset designed specifically for training AI music generation tools. The initiative positions GEMA as a proactive licensor in the AI training data space, offering rights holders a legitimate channel through which their works can be used — and compensated — in AI development. AI music transcription company Klangio is the first confirmed customer of the dataset.

The launch arrives as GEMA simultaneously pursues copyright litigation against AI music generation platform Suno, highlighting the twin-track strategy collecting societies are increasingly adopting: litigation against unlicensed use on one hand, and the construction of licensed alternatives on the other. Together, these moves signal a broader effort by rights organisations to shape the legal and commercial framework around AI music training data.
