AI Filmmakers Are Making Movies Hollywood Never Would

Independent filmmakers around the world are leveraging AI generative video tools to produce films that traditional Hollywood gatekeepers would never greenlight — from sci-fi epics to period crime capers — with minimal budgets and small or solo teams. The Austin AI Film Festival offered a window into this emerging ecosystem, where creator energy online far outpaces the more experimental fare showing in curated venues.
Among the filmmakers profiled: Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary, who turned to Runway after finding Hollywood doors closed post-pandemic, is now co-producing AI-assisted work from Paris; U.K. director Jenny Krakovsky used AI tools to finally get her long-stalled feature "Boss" off the ground; and creator PJ Accetturo ("PJ Ace") is building an expansive sci-fi franchise called "Nexus" with backing from the TikTok-connected filmmaking app Dreamina. The throughline is the same — established and emerging filmmakers alike are treating generative AI not as a gimmick but as a genuine path to production independence.
