Los Angeles-based designer and AI filmmaker Jaime Jiaming Yao is building a practice that treats generative AI not as an image-generation shortcut but as a medium for expanding perception. Working across public digital installations and AI-driven narrative short films, Yao combines real-time 3D pipelines, point-cloud reconstruction, Unreal Engine, and multi-model AI workflows to bridge urban space, memory, and cinematic storytelling. His day-to-day work as a Creative Technologist at StandardVision — a studio specializing in large-format architectural media — has grounded his approach in the specific demands of public-facing art at scale, including commissions for Long Beach Airport and the Los Angeles Public Library.
His 2025 anamorphic LED installation "At the Still Point," installed at Long Beach Airport, exemplifies the technical and conceptual ambition of his output. Using point-cloud technology, the piece deconstructs and reconstructs a local lighthouse and its coastal surroundings into discrete points of light that continuously gather and disperse, oscillating between recognizable landmark and abstract texture. The installation is designed so that travelers moving through the terminal experience the work differently depending on their angle and pace — exploiting the airport's inherent transience to embed layered spatial and emotional narrative into an everyday public environment.
