Artificial intelligence is moving from peripheral support to core integration within virtual production pipelines, enhancing real-time rendering, environment generation, motion capture, and post-production workflows. Industry practitioners like freelance DP and virtual production supervisor Quentin Jorquera trace the shift to tools such as NVIDIA DLSS, noting that AI-driven frame generation was already reshaping what was achievable in real-time Unreal Engine projects before the current wave of generative AI arrived. Today, he describes his own use as "selective and production-aware," spanning previs, visual development, asset ideation, and pipeline organisation — while cautioning that many tools remain inconsistent and poorly understood.
Netflix's acquisition of Ben Affleck's AI startup InterPositive has sharpened industry attention on the space. InterPositive's tooling is trained on a production's own dailies to support continuity, relighting, and VFX — feeding directly into Netflix's internal pipeline. Chris Lyttle, CDO at nmatic.ai and AI technical lead at newly launched hybrid studio The Next Valley, cautions that the deal is specifically a post-production tool and not a virtual production play, but Jorquera calls it "a very strong signal" that AI tools are entering the production conversation at the highest level.
