# Studios, Labels, and IP Scholars File Amicus Briefs Urging Supreme Court to Overturn Fifth Circuit's Global Copyright Termination Ruling

Five amicus briefs landed at the Supreme Court on Thursday urging the justices to grant certiorari in BMG Rights Management v. Vetter and reverse a Fifth Circuit ruling that U.S. copyright termination rights extend worldwide. The briefs were filed by the RIAA, the National Music Publishers' Association, A2IM, international federations including IFPI and FIAPF, the Motion Picture Association on behalf of major studios, Paramount Pictures separately, and a group of twenty IP law professors. Together they argue the Fifth Circuit's holding would upend settled expectations across every sector of the creative industries and, paradoxically, strip foreign creators of rights they currently hold under their own national laws.

Paramount's standalone brief makes the stakes concrete, walking through how the ruling would affect titles like The Godfather, Mission: Impossible, and Forrest Gump—whose foreign rights Paramount used to license the Bollywood remake Laal Singh Chaddha just one month before the U.S. termination by author Winston Groom took effect. Under the Fifth Circuit's rule, Paramount argues, that license would have been impossible. BMG and the major labels' publishing arms petitioned for cert in June; the case centers on the song "Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)."
