# Ron Howard at Runway AI Festival: Audiences, Not Technology, Will Determine AI Films' Future

Speaking at Runway's AI Festival at Alice Tully Hall in New York, Oscar-winning director Ron Howard told Runway co-CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela that AI has been "democratizing" filmmaking but stopped short of predicting it will dominate theaters. Howard argued that audience appetite — not technological capability — will ultimately settle the question of whether AI-generated content earns a permanent place alongside traditional productions. "What are we invested in?" he asked a crowd of several hundred attendees, suggesting viewers may accept synthetic characters much as they already accept CGI and animation, while also noting he has yet to personally see the efficiency gains the technology promises.

Howard's measured stance landed alongside a broader industry conversation: Martin Scorsese has joined AI startup Black Forest Labs as an adviser, Steven Soderbergh has openly embraced generative AI in recent productions, while Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan have characterized AI as a limited tool. Howard echoed concerns about AI's impact on the creative community but said it falls to that same community to establish appropriate legal and cultural guidelines, adding that the technology "is going to evolve, and audiences are ultimately going to tell us."
