# Music Industry Coalition Launches Voluntary AI Labels for Sound Recordings on Streaming Platforms

_Legal · published 2026-07-16_

A coalition of major music industry and artists' organizations — including the RIAA, IFPI, the Recording Academy (Grammys), SAG-AFTRA, and the Human Artistry Campaign — has introduced a voluntary labeling system to distinguish AI-generated from AI-assisted sound recordings on streaming services. The system uses two simple icons: one for works where generative AI produced the entirety or primary portion of the recording, and another for works that are substantially human-made but incorporate some AI-generated expressive elements. The labels are designed for adoption by digital music services, distributors, and others across the ecosystem.

The announcement comes as AI-generated music reaches significant scale on major platforms: Deezer reported that AI-generated tracks account for 44% of all new music uploaded to its service, while Apple Music noted that more than one-third of its catalog is "100% AI." IFPI CEO Vikki Oakley and RIAA chairman Mitch Glazier cited fan demand for transparency and human artistry as the driving motivation. Notably, the current framework covers only sound recordings and does not yet extend to AI use in lyrics, composition, music videos, or cover art.
