# Director Pham Viet Phuoc: AI Is a Tool, Filmmakers Remain the Creative Force

Ho Chi Minh City Television's Film Studio (TFS) is integrating AI into its short film production "The Hunting Ground," with director Pham Viet Phuoc leading the effort. In an interview with Saigon Giai Phong newspaper, Phuoc explained that TFS deliberately chose traditional filmmakers—rather than AI engineers—to lead the project, prioritizing human artistic vision over technological novelty. He acknowledged real limitations in current AI tools, including inconsistent character details across scenes (such as a character gaining or losing glasses between shots) and a tendency toward homogeneous character modeling when not guided by real-world references.

Phuoc framed AI as a technical assistant requiring active human oversight at every stage—scriptwriting, music, and voice-over—arguing that the director's role now includes a new creative layer: communicating intent effectively to AI systems. He was critical of AI short film productions prioritizing speed over substance, saying that approach yields low-quality, similar-looking content. For "The Hunting Ground," the studio's stated goal was to produce a cultural product with meaningful social impact, accepting a slower production pace as a result.
