Agence France-Presse (AFP) has launched MediaGen, a €4 million generative AI initiative selected under France's France 2030 plan and backed by the French Public Investment Bank (BPI). The 24-month project, led by AFP in consortium with AI startups Quivr and Kairntech and data exchange firm Dawex, aims to develop trustworthy AI tools purpose-built for media organisations. AFP Chairman and CEO Fabrice Fries framed it as a demonstration that "AI innovation can be used for reliable, responsible, and independent news."

MediaGen will produce three concrete tools: an enhanced, real-time news monitoring system that aggregates sources including social networks and press releases; advanced multimodal search across text, photo, and video archives; and a content production assistant designed to adapt material across formats while flagging journalistic biases. Some resulting technology will be released under open-source licences for the broader media sector, while other components will be commercialised for strategic monitoring use cases in business and institutional markets.
